This dataset contains data used in the following study:
Feng, S., Melia, N., Yap, H. S., Abraham, A., Chan, Y. N., Hung, D., Suckling, J., Teo, C. L., Robbins, T., Sahakian, B., Kourtzi, Z., Leong, V., Chen, A., Hendriks, H., Christopoulos, G., & the CLIC Phase 1 Consortium. (2026). Over Fifteen Years of Confusion: How the Big Five Inventory Mismeasures Openness. European Journal of Personality, 08902070261450714. https://doi.org/10.1177/08902070261450714
The data used in this study consist of 10 data files:
Dataset1.csv,
Dataset2.csv,
Dataset3.csv,
Dataset4.csv,
Dataset5_WVS(Singapore).csv,
Dataset6_WVS(South_Africa).csv,
Dataset7_Tobin_Guadagno_2022.csv,
Dataset8_Dufault_2023.csv,
Dataset9_ISSP(New_Zealand).csv, and
Dataset_ISSP(Germany).csv.
Here we only share Datasets 1 to 4, as the licensing terms of the original data sources for Datasets 5–9 and the ISSP (Germany) dataset may prohibit redistribution or do not explicitly permit it. Consequently, these datasets are not provided here. Instead, we provide a script (BFI_data_preprocessing_otherDatasets.Rmd) for generating these datasets using data downloaded from the original sources.
Each data file contains participants' responses to the items in the 10-item Big Five personality inventory (BFI-10; Rammstedt & John, 2007) or the 44-item version (BFI-44; John et al., 1991). They were used to investigate a problematic openness item in the BFI: "I see myself as someone who has few artistic interests".
Datasets 1 to 4 were collected by our research team at NTU, and have gone through data cleaning.
Datasets 5 and 6 are part of the WVS Wave 6 data (Inglehart et al., 2014), and the source data were downloaded from https://www.worldvaluessurvey.org/WVSDocumentationWV6.jsp.
The source data for Dataset 7 was downloaded from https://osf.io/dwcaz/ (Tobin & Guadagno, 2022).
The source data for Dataset 8 was downloaded from https://osf.io/cukrx/ (Dufault et al., 2023), DOI: 10.17605/OSF.IO/CUKRX
The source data for Dataset 9 and the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) Germany dataset were downloaded from https://search.gesis.org/research_data/ZA4350. https://doi.org/10.4232/1.11648.
You can download the source data from the URLs above and run the script (
BFI_data_preprocessing_otherDatasets.Rmd) to generate the datasets used in our study.
