Abstract:

Bodymaps can be useful for tracking sensation, or documenting certain aspects of language use. Bodymaps can be used when asking people about their experience of sensory traits, or changes in sensation over time. This can form part of a clinical consultation, diagnosis of sensory issues or as part of patient-centred care including pain management. Bodymaps can also be used to check a person’s ability to understand or say particular words. Comprehension (understanding) and production (speaking) tasks can be helpful in language assessments of children and second language learners; as well as in cases of aphasia, aged care, or language loss. Bodymaps can be used for documenting particular varieties of a language, by asking people about how their language labels different parts of the body, or documenting the range of reference for different words.

Creation of the Sense Bodymap
Many existing bodymaps are modelled after a stereotypical bodies with white racial characteristics. Bodymaps typically depict a stereotypical body of one sex even if the genitals are not depicted. The Sense Bodymap was designed to be more androgynous, and more racially ambiguous, with a body shape more suitable in East and South East Asia. Genitals are not depicted, making the bodymap suitable for contexts where they may be considered offensive, or where they may be distracting for the given task. The face has been sketched minimally in a calm expression, without defining racial or gendered features.
This archive contains several versions of the Sense Bodymap including an A4 dual view showing the whole of the front-view and back-view, and a composite front-back view. The archive also contains files with a single bodymap per page, as well as 8-images per page, suitable for a weekly tracking task, a mapping task with multiple sensory targets, or a language documentation task with multiple bodyparts. Finally, versions with implied body-coverings have been created, for use in contexts where an uncovered body might be considered inappropriate or distracting.

The Sense Bodymap was created by Suzy J Styles for use in the class Language in Perception and Thought in 2021, at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
